Tips for keeping your bones healthy

Even though the muscles are what propel us to movement, our bones are what allow the muscles to function. Keeping your skeletal system healthy is essential for overall wellness. Diet and exercise strategies can help you maintain a healthy skeletal system.

Get more calcium

Calcium is the most important aspect of keeping your bones healthy. Milk is one of the most popular ways to take in your daily calcium. Any dairy product will be full of calcium, so a few servings a day of cheese, yogurt or milk can provide the amount you need. But milk isn’t the only possible source. The following foods are also rich in calcium:

  • Almonds
  • Figs
  • Seeds, including poppy, celery, sesame and chia seeds
  • Beans and lentils
  • Sardines and canned salmon
  • Whey protein
  • Leafy greens
  • Rhubarb
  • Fortified foods like cereal
  • Fortified drinks
  • Amaranth grain or leaves
  • Edamame and tofu
Keep Your Bones Healthy

Even pasta and rice contain a serving of calcium. Eating these foods will help boost your calcium to the level your body needs to maintain a healthy skeletal system.

Remember, consuming sufficient levels of calcium when you are younger will help keep your bones strong as you get older, which is when you need healthy bones the most.

Work out regularly

Exercising is a great way to keep your bones healthy and durable. Working out helps strengthen the bones used in the activities as well as the muscles that surround them.

Because exercise is so good for your bones, you will want to make sure you use both your upper body and lower body during exercise so you will have strong and healthy bones throughout your body.

You don’t need to exhaust yourself to keep your bones strong. A simple walk each day can do wonders for maintaining a healthy skeletal system.
